FARMINGTON — A production of “The Wizard of Oz” is planned for this year’s Farmington Children’s Summer Theater.

Sponsored by the Mt. Blue Music Boosters, the camp promotes music and art during the summer.

There are 15 openings for children in the Aug. 1 and 2 productions.

Director Kat Zachery will work with children from 9 a.m. to noon July 21 through Aug. 1 in the Bjorn Auditorium at Mt. Blue High School.

For two weeks in the summer, children learn their part in a play, which also serves as a training ground to move on to the school district’s theater program, Debbie Seeley, Music Boosters member, previously said.

The students get experience on stage and in public speaking. They help create costumes and design sets. They also learn theater exercises, such as how to control their voice, relax their bodies and become their character. They also learn to work together and help each other, she said.

The cost is $85 per student. The Music Boosters get money through ticket sales, she said.

Organizers have struggled to find a director this year. Two had to step down for personal reasons, Seeley said. Zachery signed on at the end of May, but then the group found the production they intended to do was going to be performed by the Sandy River Players. So they changed the production to “The Wizard of Oz,” she said.

The Music Boosters are parents of children in any RSU 9 musical program. The group provides scholarships for students in grades four through 11 to attend summer music camps or to take private lessons during the summer.

In addition to the scholarship program, the group helps when a teacher needs a certain piece of equipment or an elementary student needs financial assistance to purchase an instrument. The grop supports Summer Children’s Theater and helps with costs for all-state music candidates from the district.
