Pitch, pinochle players wanted

LEWISTON — Pinochle and pitch card games for seniors are played weekly during the summer at the Lewiston Armory, 65 Central Ave.

New players are always welcome. Pitch is played at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays. Pinochle is at 1 p.m. on Thursdays. Refresher courses are available in both categories.

League play starts the first week in September.

The armory is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday. You must become a member to play.

Strawberry festival supper

BOWDOIN — A strawberry festival supper will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at West Bowdoin Baptist Church, 54 West Road.

Meal consists of casseroles, baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, pickles, brown bread, home-style bread and strawberry shortcake with real whipped cream.

Cost is $7.50 for adults, $3.50 for children under 12 and free for preschoolers.

Topic: Genetic high cholesterol

LEWISTON — “Familial Hypercholesterolemia: Is High Cholesterol In Your Genes?” is the subject of a free Central Maine Medical Center Accenting Your Health presentation set for 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, in Conference Room H, on the lower lever of the 12 High Street Medical Office Building.

Dervilla M. McCann, M.D., a cardiologist affiliated with the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute, will discuss familial hypercholesterolemia, an inherited disorder that causes high LDL cholesterol (“bad cholesterol”). The condition begins at birth and can cause heart attacks at an early age. McCann will discuss recommended screenings and treatment options.

MSAD 52 summer classes

TURNER — MSAD 52 Adult Education has announced summer courses and camp offerings; many classes start July 7.

New camps include Punk Rope, Backcountry Basics, Mad Science Junior Engineering Camp and five-week Pottery Fun. Other new offerings include Beginner Colorguard and Sketchbook Explorers.

Returning popular camps are Children’s Theater, Challenger Soccer, Tumbling, Field Hockey, Soccer, Art and Yoga Adventure. Classes for the community include Welding 101, Couch to 5K, Vinyasa Flow Yoga, Brain Gym and Dog Obedience.

Monmouth Garden Club Tour luncheon

MONMOUTH — Monmouth Garden Club Tour luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Packard Activity Center, The United Church of Monmouth.

There will be a full buffet of salads and side dishes, lobster roll, chicken salad, fruit cups, “Choose-‘n-take” dessert cookies, lemonade, iced tea and hot drinks.

The cost for a lobster roll and full buffet is $14; full buffet, $8.

Heritage Day, Strawberry Festival

POLAND — Poland Spring Heritage Day & Strawberry Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the Poland Spring Resort & Preservation Park.

This is a family-friendly, fun event featuring a dunk tank, rock climbing wall, horse draw carriage rides, pony rides, kids doughnut eating contest, sack races, carnival games, Maine Wildlife Park exhibit, craft vendors, food and strawberry festival. 

There also will be tour of four historic buildings: The Maine State Building built in Chicago in 1893, dismantled, shipped back to Maine and reconstructed in 11 months; the All Souls Chapel, built in 1912; the original Poland Spring Bottling Plant; and the original Spring House. Proceeds benefit the Poland Spring Preservation Society, Poland Community Church and others.
