Mayor Wiseman has under consideration a plan to borrow $100,000 on a temporary loan for the City of Lewiston to expend in permanent improvements on streets and sidewalks, building or repairing the Thorne’s corner school house and relieving the cramped condition of the city finances. Mayor Wiseman said that the streets, sidewalks, sewers and schoolhouses were in poor condition from a neglect as a result of the endeavor to scrimp in making appropriations. The mayor made the point that it would be poor business to let departments go without the proper repair until the point was reached where complete rebuilding would have to be done.

Water District trustees Friday approved a request by the Lakeside Performing Arts Center to use the district’s land during an upcoming performance of the Portland Symphony Orchestra. Employees and performers will park their cars along the entrance road to the pumping station located just north of the Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute’s main drive, which leads to the performance area. Brush growing along a short path that connects the two will have to be trimmed back, and a small amount of gravel placed along the path for easier walking. The district also must provide security on the access road because of the proximity to the pumping station. “I suggest we require them to pay our costs for providing these services,” he said, estimating the bill to be about $336 per affair. Unlike past years, when only one performance was held, the Lakeside Performing Arts Center has scheduled three concerts this summer — the Portland Symphony Orchestra on July 15; Emmylou Harris on Aug. 5; and Ray Charles on Aug. 27.
