1933 – 2014

LEWISTON — Bertha Annie Smith, 80, a resident of Turner, died Wednesday, July 2, at d’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston, where she had resided for the past six months.

She was born Dec. 4, 1933, in Turner, the daughter of Bruce Maxwell Smith and Viola May (McGlenchy) Smith Hannon. Bertha attended school in Turner.

Bertha relocated to Massachusetts and worked cleaning houses. She later was employed at Massachusetts General Hospital, retiring as administrator of housekeeping after 30 years of service in 1983.

She enjoyed her Tuesday night Bible study group, was an avid reader and enjoyed playing games on the computer. She also enjoyed her family and going out to supper with Mary Ellen and Eric.

Bertha had a love for animals and was a supporter of wildlife preservation and the Humane Society. She will greeted in Heaven by her dog, Luna Beth, that she missed greatly, and her other special dog, Petunia, that was always by her side.

Her family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at d’Youville Pavilion for all their help with their feisty loved one Bertha, as well as to Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice. A special thank-you to her dietician, Louise, for such kindness and compassion. They would also like to thank her niece, Tina Crowley, for being by her side daily.
