100 years ago, 1914
The word has been pronounced and the Maine State Grange is to meet in Lewiston in December. The executive committee of that body met in the Dewitt House Thursday afternoon and made the final decision. This will be good news to all the people of these cities as the grange is an organization that they all delight to honor and welcome. This means a tremendous crowd of people to entertain and it is up to these cities to see that it is done in a royal manner. Not only our cities, but the whole of Androscoggin county is interested and every town will contribute its share of good cheer to the guests.

50 years ago, 1964
Lewiston’s own Beatles, the Royal Knights, will give a special performance at the 1964 Independence Day festivities slated for the Lewiston Fairgrounds on Saturday. The well-known group will be on hand to add color to the Fourth of July activities. The group will perform at about 8 p.m. The festivities will get underway at about 6 p.m. with a variety of races for the youngsters. Bicycle races for the kiddies will he held, in addition to foot races and three-legged races. Competition will he open to youngsters four years of age and older.

25 years ago, 1989
Lewiston’s Joey Gamache, facing the first loss of his professional boxing career after sustaining a gash over his left eye in the third round, rocked Canadian lightweight champion Johnny Kalbhenn from the fifth round on to earn a unanimous decision Monday night. About 5,000 fans watched at the Seacoast Performing Arts Center, Old Orchard Beach, as Gamache improved his record to 16-0 after a head butt put a deep vertical cut over his left eye. Kalbhenn is now 20-7-2. The fight was broadcast nationally on a tape-delay basis by SportsChannel of America. Gamache, who had never been cut in his pro career, brutalized Kalbhenn from the fifth round on, but the sturdy Canadian simply wouldn’t buckle.
