MEXICO — A makeshift bomb that blew up the mailbox at the First Baptist Church on Friday night was mistaken for Fourth of July fireworks.
Mexico police Lt. Dan Carrier said police were called to the church at 20 Roxbury Road at 11:05 a.m. Saturday.
“But the explosion actually occurred at about 9:30 p.m. the night before,” Carrier said. “That’s when witnesses actually heard it, but they thought it was fireworks. It wasn’t until they went to the church Saturday morning that they realized it was more than that.”
Carrier said the police are continuing to follow up and investigate the explosion. People with any information about the incident should contact the Mexico Police Department at 207-364-5686.
