UPDATED 10:10 AM: The Maine Warden Service reports that Ruth Frances Brennan has been found alive. Learn more about how they found her.

WATERFORD — A second day of searching brought no new leads on the whereabouts of a missing 77-year-old South Portland woman last seen Monday morning walking a ways from a camp where she is vacationing with her family.

Teams from across the state used helicopters, horses, dogs and ground searchers Tuesday to look for Ruth Frances Brennan, who was last seen walking along Five Kezars Road toward Melby’s Market & Eatery on Route 35 in North Waterford, according to Maine Warden Service Lt. Kevin Adam.

The search covered a roughly four-square mile area around where she was last seen. The area consists of woods with dense undergrowth, camp roads, ATV trails and walking paths. Teams gathered at 7 a.m. and focused early efforts on easily accessible trails, paths and roads before conducting grid searches through the woods.

Brennan was known to walk several miles a day and was in good physical health. Adam said it was “surprising” no evidence of her whereabouts had surfaced.

“We don’t know what turn she took, so we have to search all of them,” Adam said. “Most areas are not easy to traverse, so that should help us a bit.”

Brennan is described as 5 feet, 2 inches tall and was last seen wearing a crewneck striped shirt, Capri-style blue jeans, a tan hat, light beige sneakers and light green socks.

Brennan left a camp at 6 Spur Ridge Road on Middle Pond around 10 a.m. Monday toward Route 35, a path she routinely took. After noticing her missing, family looked for Brennan for over an hour before contacting police, Adam said.

Brennan has symptoms common with dementia, but officials are unsure if that has played a factor in her disappearance. There is no evidence of foul play, Adam said.

A passing motorist reportedly spotted Brennan walking along Five Kezars Road in the direction of Route 35 on Monday, and wardens are trying to substantiate a number of rumored sightings later that afternoon.

Maine game wardens, Maine state troopers, Oxford County Sheriff’s deputies, and members of Maine’s Air National Guard were joined by over 60 volunteers from search outfits across the state. They included Maine Association for Search and Rescue, Waldo County Search and Rescue, Dirigo Search & Rescue, Mahoosuc Mountain Rescue Team, Maine Search and Rescue Dogs, Maine Mounted Search and Rescue and Pine Tree Search and Rescue. They traversed miles of woods and hills surrounding the camp.

A mobile command post is established at the Waterford Fire and Rescue building at 366 Valley Road, and crews departed the station around 8 a.m., working throughout the day to search half-mile grids. The search is scheduled to continue until just after midnight, and resume Wednesday morning, if necessary.

Crews worked through Monday into the early hours of Tuesday morning. By Tuesday afternoon, the search was briefly halted to allow search dogs to recuperate from the heat, which hovered in the high 80s with high humidity. The forecast for the area Tuesday evening is for occasional thunderstorms and clouds overnight.

Family members had posted missing-person fliers at Melby’s Market & Eatery and other high-traffic areas.

Deborah Palman of Amherst, a member of the Maine Search and Rescue Dogs, was searching for signs along Kezar Ridge Road, which is between Five Kezars Road and Spur Ridge Road. Shew as accompanied by her search dog Raven, a 17-month-old Labrador retriever. Search dogs can pick up and alert handlers to human scent, Palman said.

John Becker, a surveyor from Waterford and a former firefighter, said he took the day off from work to volunteer when he heard help was needed.

“My wife works for the Town Office,” Becker said. “I was on my way to work when I heard they needed more help.”

Police have established informational roadblocks for passing motorists to seek information on Brennan’s whereabouts. Anyone with information is asked to call the Maine State Police barracks in Gray at 207-657-3030.
