RUMFORD — A public hearing to discuss the upcoming vote for the General Assistance budget is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today at the Rumford Falls Auditorium.

Selectmen will meet at 6:30 p.m. and hold another public hearing on whether to amend an appendix of the town’s General Assistance Ordinance.

During their June 19 meeting, selectmen unanimously approved a revised General Assistance budget of $65,000, a $28,406 decrease from their initial proposal of $93,406 that voters defeated June 10 at the town meeting referendum. The vote was 700-773.

Chairman Greg Buccina said any General Assistance reimbursement from the state will be placed in the General Assistance account.

Previously, town officials had put that money in the General Fund and used it to cover shortfalls in the General Assistance budgets.

In other business, selectmen will discuss the following topics:

* A request from Holy Savior School to close a section of Maine Avenue for the Holy Savior Fall Festival.

*A request from Steven Shearer regarding the tax-acquired property at 16 Free St.

* Approval of ballot clerks.

* Approval of a General Assistance Ordinance for the Department of Health and Human Services.

* Approval of a pole permit from Central Maine Power for Isthmus Road bridge.

* Election of Maine Municipal Association Legislative Policy Committee members.
