Thousands of unaccompanied alien children are streaming across the Texas border.
The Border Patrol has been overwhelmed by the influx of illegal aliens, more accurately described as escorted illegal alien minors with non-parental escorts, and who can be up to 17 years old.
Most are coming from the Central American countries of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. While I can understand their desire to leave the violence in their crime-ridden countries, the U.S. cannot take in all the world’s problems.
According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform, the Border Patrol is so overwhelmed it is sending those aliens to other states.
The distance from Lewiston to McAllen, Texas — the principal entry area — is 2,324 miles. Should Mainers be concerned about them arriving here?
According to news reports, Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts, Maine’s neighbor to the south, is seriously considering a request from Washington officials to take some of the unaccompanied children.
It can be stopped, as was done in Baltimore, Md., where the Democratic mayor and Maryland’s two Democratic senators objected as soon as the details were announced, according to The Washington Times.
It can also be prevented here in Maine and the best way to do that is for Gov. Paul LePage and Maine’s Congressional delegation to make it clear that Maine does not want planeloads of unaccompanied alien children arriving in this state.
So far, they have been mute.
