1922 – 2014

WESTBROOK — Vaino Edward Waisanen, affectionately known to all as Eddie, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 15.

Eddie was born on Oct. 31, 1922, to Matti and Aino (Mustonen) Waisanen in Richardson Hollow. He was one of nine children.

Eddie married Frances Littlehale on July 17, 1949, and they moved to Prides Corner, Westbrook.

Eddie was a self-employed contractor for his entire career, but devoted his life to serving others in his community. He was a member of the Westbrook Planning Board for years. He was a Shriner and was a Past Master of Mason’s Temple Lodge No. 86. He was also an active participant in the Kiwanis “We Build” program. He helped construct the current Prides Corner Church, where he was a very active member.

Eddie loved telling stories of life growing up in Richardson Hollow, running the farm and working the family logging business. He was especially proud of his Finnish heritage. Eddie and Frances owned a camp in Greenwood, which was a former one-room schoolhouse that Eddie and his siblings all attended.

Surviving are his daughter, Donna Witham LeClair and her husband, Mark; his grandchildren, Heath, Reece and Courtney; his brother, Harold; his sister-in-law, Polly Durant; and many nieces and nephews.

Eddie was predeceased by his wife, Frances; his parents, Matti and Aino; sisters, Martha and Tyyne; and brothers, Villo, Toivo, Henry, Eino and Michael.

The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Biny and her entire staff at Country Village Assisted Living in Casco for the exceptional care and love over the past two years.
