JAY — Police say a local man robbed the Franklin Savings Bank on Route 4 on Friday afternoon.

Alan Lewis, 39, of Jay was arrested on a felony charge of robbery and a misdemeanor charge of operating without a license, acting police Chief Richard Caton IV said. Lewis was being held on $75,000 cash bail.

Police say Lewis went into the bank and passed a teller a note requesting money, Caton said. He said Lewis made off with more than $1,500 and left in a vehicle heading south on Route 4.

The robbery was reported to the Franklin County Regional Communications Center in Farmington at 3:14 p.m.

The suspect’s image was captured on surveillance video, police said.

Officers went to Lewis’ home on nearby Jewell Street. He came out of the house on his own and was arrested within 90 minutes of the robbery, Caton said.

Police recovered the stolen money, he said. No one was injured.

If convicted of the robbery charge, Lewis would face up to 10 years in prison and up to a $20,000 fine.
