LEWISTON — The lead vocalist for local heavy metal band When Muppetz Attack was stabbed in the stomach early Sunday morning in what police described as a “huge melee” on Oak Street.

Members of the band appeared at The Cage on Saturday evening and they and their friends were gathered at 74 Oak St. at 1:22 a.m. Sunday when Jason Johnson, 42, of Lewiston was stabbed.

According to Johnson’s mother, Alicia Johnson, the band was storing their equipment after the Cage gig when her son was attacked, but Facebook posts on the band’s page indicate the band was hosting an after-party at that address, which is near Blake Street, when Johnson was attacked.

According to Lewiston Lt. Michael McGonagle, police were still interviewing witnesses and investigating the incident Tuesday. When police were called to Oak Street on Sunday, there were eight to 10 people there actively involved in a fight, he said, and “we’re still trying to sort it out.”

At least one other person was seriously injured during the fight, but no one had yet been charged in the altercation.

Alicia Johnson said her son suffered a deep cut, which she estimated to be about 5½ inches long, to his stomach. He was treated at Central Maine Medical Center and released, she said.

McGonagle asked anyone with information about the incident to call the Lewiston Police Department at 513-3001.
