BAR HARBOR (AP) — Maine officials say a 22-year-old man was seriously injured when he fell 60 feet while climbing a cliff at Acadia National Park.

Park authorities said the man was free climbing without ropes or a helmet when he fell off the south wall of Champlain Mountain near the Precipice Trail on Sunday morning. He was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center.

The man’s name and condition haven’t been released. Officials say he’s from Brunswick, Maine.

Rescuers at the scene said the man appeared to have serious back and wrist injuries.

The site of the fall isn’t too far from where 22-year-old University of Maine student Shirley Ladd died after falling from the Precipice Trail while hiking.

Officials are urging people to not climb alone and always wear helmets.
