BUCKFIELD — Selectmen voted Tuesday night to award contracts for road work to Maynard & Sons Trucking of Sumner and D & D Excavating of Buckfield.

Cindy Dunn, town manager and road commissioner, said there is much work to be done and both contractors working in different parts of town could get it done before winter. She said she will split the jobs, which include ditching, erosion control, culvert replacements and bridge work, between the contractors.

Four bid packets were sent out and only Maynard & Sons and D & D Excavating submitted offers, she said.

In other news, the board signed the General Assistance Ordinance and appointed James Bennett Jr. to the Board of Appeals for three years and Josh Jack to the Recreation Committee.

The board was informed of the household hazardous waste collection scheduled from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Norway-Paris Solid Waste station, 39 Brown St., Norway. It is sponsored by the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments in Auburn. Brochures are available at the Town Office with details of what qualifies for disposal.

The board approved a permit for CMP to erect a pole on Old Sumner Road.

Approval for a cell tower for Cross Road was tabled until the next meeting so the board could study the request further.

A special town meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the Buckfield Junior-Senior High School to see if voters will rescind a vote to cut the Rescue Department budget by $51,585.

A previously scheduled special town meeting for Saturday, Aug. 16, was canceled.
