A borrowed piece of fire equipment from the Mechanic Falls Fire Department was reportedly “the one thing that is working” in aiding Lewiston’s firefighters to extinguish a stubborn dump fire at Fournier’s Junk Yard on the River Rd. Fire Chief Roland G. Dumais reported that he borrowed a two and one-half inch bayonet applicator which was made by the Mechanic Falls Fire Department. The special equipment was pushed into the burning material, then a hose connected on the other end, and the result is a general flooding of the trouble spot. Chief Dumais estimated that his firefighting equipment has been pumping water on the blaze at the rate of 400 gallons a minute. The special tool was borrowed from the Mechanic Falls Fire Department because the applicators that the local department has were just not big enough. The chief said that he expects his men to he battling the fire through the night.

The state’s largest health insurance company, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine, is eliminating 56 jobs and closing its Lewiston office as part of a cost-cutting plan unveiled Friday, company officials said. The focus of the plan is to consolidate services to the 550,000 subscribers statewide by installing additional toll-free telephone lines and centralizing telemarketing operations. In place of the Lisbon Street office in Lewiston, the company is planning to offer personalized service to area customers with periodic “customer service days” in community or retirement centers in Lewiston-Auburn.
