NEW GLOUCESTER — Shaker Village will offer a series of traditional craft workshops, folk demonstrations, educational nature walks, free wagon rides and homemade Shaker apple fritters on Saturday, Aug. 16. Workshops on Saturday will require pre-registration. They include

• Make a Shaker-style pine bench with nationally renowned local craftsman Chris Becksvoort ($85).

• In “Beginner’s Woodcarving” local master-carved Norm Devonshire will teach how to sharpen knives, cutting techniques and methods of basic woodcarving, while each participant completes a “Scottie-dog” ($50).

• Learn the best techniques for basic quilting by making a classic heart-and-hand pillow with embroidered Shaker motto “Hands to Work, Hearts to God” taught by expert local seamstress Diane Devonshire ($40).

• Restore a chair or stool with Sandy Dyzak in “Weave a Shaker Style Chair Seat” ($50).

• Resident naturalist Carolyn Fensore will lead “Nature’s Outdoor Classroom,” a two and a half-hour hike through the Shakers’ 1,800 acres of diversified habitats while identifying and explaining flora, fauna, geological formations, and Shaker history along the way ($8 adults, $2 children).

Participants may watch free demonstrations of textile working and yarn spinning by the R & R Spinners, who extend an invitation to all amateur spinners to bring their spinning wheels and join the gathering under the great 116-year-old maple tree.

Free tractor-drawn wagon rides will be offered throughout the day. Tour the Shakers’ historic Village, gardens and orchards.
