LEWISTON — Nominations for the 2014 Amanda Dempsey Award presented by Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer will be accepted until Aug. 25 at www.dempseychallenge.org. The award, which has been renamed in memory of Amanda Dempsey, is presented to a cancer survivor who has a passion for helping others with cancer.
“Amgen is proud to honor individuals who make a positive difference in the fight against cancer,” said Bob Azelby, vice president and general manager, Amgen Oncology. “This year we have decided to connect this special award with Amanda Dempsey’s enduring legacy of strength and service to others. Breakaway from Cancer was founded on the knowledge that it takes a team to overcome this disease, and the individuals nominated for the Amanda Dempsey Award exemplify this commitment to helping others.”
The recipient will lead the Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Walk on Saturday, Sept. 27, in Simard-Payne Park, and will also be honored at the Champions for Hope Celebration that evening.
The criteria for nominees are as follows:
* Individual is a cancer survivor;
* Individual demonstrates passion for helping others diagnosed with cancer;
* Individual is actively involved in community outreach;
* Individual inspires others by their demonstrated passion;
* Individual lives and/or ‘helps others’ in the state of Maine.
Past winners include Hayley Sontag (2013), Kristen Short (2012), Laura Davis (2011) and Scott Thomas (2010).
