With rumors of an endorsement from Sen. Angus King swirling late Sunday evening, the campaign of independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler confirmed to the Bangor Daily News that it will hold two press conferences on Monday, Aug. 18.

The events are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in Portland and 2:30 p.m. in Bangor, with the venues yet to be determined, according to the campaign.

Cutler campaign staff refused to confirm or deny reports of the King endorsement as the reasons for the announcements, insisting that details would be released at the time.

BDN political blogger Rebekah Metzler and Portland Press Herald political commentator Ethan Strimling both reported news of the King endorsement on Sunday.

While the Cutler campaign would not comment on these reports, a King endorsement for Cutler is viewed as a crucial necessity for the independent’s campaign against incumbent Gov. Paul LePage, the Republican nominee, and Democratic nominee U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud.
