SOUTH PORTLAND (AP) — South Portland’s City Council has voted to place a measure on the November ballot that would legalize possession of marijuana.
The council voted unanimously Monday night to put the question on the ballot. The measure would make it legal for people 21 and older to possess up to one ounce of marijuana.
The Portland Press Herald reported that all seven councilors noted their opposition to legalizing marijuana but decided to leave it up to voters.
Activists who want to legalize pot in Maine cities and towns, and eventually statewide, submitted more than 1,500 signatures in favor of legalization to the city last month.
Portland passed a referendum last year allowing recreational use of marijuana by adults. Since then, marijuana advocates have been pressing for votes in other communities.
