1925 – 2014

LEWISTON — Lucille C. Conant, 89, of Buckfield Road in Turner, died peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Central Maine Medical Center.

Lucille was born in Norway on Jan. 22, 1925, to Byron Woods and Geraldine McAllister Woods. She attended South Paris High School, where she enjoyed sports, excelled academically and graduated a year early in 1942.

Lucille married Ernest “Sam” Sampson on Feb. 23, 1946, in South Paris. They lived in Turner, where they raised their children and Lucille cared for loved ones for many years. They were married for 45 years, until his death in 1991.

In 1993, Lucille married Edward “Cy” Conant in West Paris. They lived in Turner where they spent four years enjoying life, until his death in 1997.

Lucille worked as a legal secretary at Abbott’s law firm as well as various heel factories in Auburn. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 58, where she was a president as well as other offices for many years.

Lucille will be remembered mostly for her unconditional love of everyone. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she met, as well as a great zest for life. She enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles, as well as gardening. She especially loved going out to eat with her friends at Storekeepers in Hebron and spending time with family. She will be deeply missed by many friends and family members.

Lucille is survived by her daughters, Becky Howes and her husband, Hugh, of Turner and Wanda Gay of Turner; grandchildren, Timothy Deschaines and wife, Jessica, of Riverview, Fla., Roland Gay and his wife, Joann, of Buxton, Angela Michaud and her husband, Gary, of Turner, Laura Desrosiers and her husband, Shawn, of Allenstown, N.H., and Hillarie Howes of Rockport; as well as seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Catherine Saunders, of Hebron; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Ernest Sampson and Edward Conant; brothers, Maynard and Lorin Woods; a son-in-law, Roland Gay II; and a great-granddaughter, Grace Gay.
