FRYEBURG — Traffic on Lovewell Pond Road was temporarily closed to one lane early Wednesday morning after two cars collided at the intersection of Ice House Road.

According to acting police Chief Joshua Potvin, the accident occurred at 8:40 a.m. when Frances Nevers, 55, of Baldwin, driving a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, and her passenger, Denise Burke, 56, of Fryeburg, were stopped in traffic at the intersection.

Potvin said while Nevers was waiting to make a right turn, their car was struck head-on by a 1995 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Harvey Burnell, 79, of Fryeburg, who was turning left onto Ice House Road from Lovewell Pond Road.

“The crash occurred when the operator attempted to cut the corner when making the turn. Operators are urged to stay in your appropriate lane when approaching an intersection or making a turn,” Potvin said in a statement released Wednesday.

Potvin said Fryeburg Rescue responded with two ambulances. Fire personnel assisted with fluid leaks and traffic.

Officer Timothy Libby investigated. No charges have been filed at this time, the chief said.

Burke was taken to Bridgton Hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.

“With the start of school quickly approaching, my officers are being vigilant in traffic law enforcement,” Potvin said.
