WEST PARIS — The West Paris Library will display original pine needle baskets made by Julie Daye beginning Wednesday, Sept. 3.
Daye, a native of the Sunday River area, is currently of Norway and Babson Park, Fla. Over the years, she has done many crafts, including toy-making, costume design, knitting, crocheting and sewing. Eight years ago, Daye took a 12-week course while in Florida, offered by the Audubon Society, where she learned to make functional baskets.
The baskets are made using needles of up to 18 inches from the long leaf pine, which grows abundantly in Florida. The needles are from Florida, but Daye creates her baskets while in Maine, therefore, “Made in Main.e.
In addition to the basket display running throughout September, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, the library will host Daye giving a demonstration of her basket weaving. Accompanying the demonstration will be a history of the unusual and creative pine needle weaving craft.
There will be refreshments following the presentation.
