PARIS — The Maine Department of Transportation will look into easing traffic congestion in downtown in a study later this year.

Town Manager Amy Bernard told selectmen Monday night that the MDOT has agreed to fund a new study analyzing traffic patterns in and around Market Square, after backing off an initial suggestion that Paris cover half the bill.

“This is the first step to make the town more pedestrian-friendly,” Bernard said.

Traffic in the Market Square rotary headed north on Route 26 or east on Route 117 do not have to stop, but those headed south on Route 26 or west on Route 117 must to enter the rotary.

State roads are maintained by MDOT, which typically funds road work and requires municipalities proposing to make change to seek approval from Augusta.

Town officials view the step as one of a number of initiatives to improving the appeal of the downtown to visitors and businesses.

A message left with MDOT was not returned Wednesday.
