100 years ago, 1914
The first step toward paving Lisbon street from Main to Ash was taken Thursday night at the meeting of the Lewiston public works commission by a vote instructing Supt. Roy and Clerk Foss to secure estimates of the cost per yard and to report September 10 at the next meeting. Mayor Wiseman and the members of the board have realized the wretched condition of Lisbon street and movement has been on for some time to repair it. The kind of sidewalk to lay on the eastern sidewalk on Main street from North bridge to Lisbon street was debated. It is thought that on account of the pitch that a corrugated cement walk would bring the best results and this kind will be constructed in all probability.

50 years ago, 1964
A proud but somewhat nervous attorney approached the bench at Androscoggin Superior Court today and petitioned that his son be admitted to the Maine Bar. When the petition was granted, Attorney Frank W. Linnell and his son, Attorney John R. Linnell became the 12th father and son legal team in the area. The elder Linnell said he has appeared before the court a good many times during the past 30 years but “seldom have I been more nervous than today.”

25 years ago, 1989
The fate of the former Frye School in Lewiston will be discussed by the city’s Land Committee Tuesday in the City Building. The Land Committee is scheduled to consider the Planning Board’s recommendation to sell the 140 Ash St. building. The board in May recommended selling the 123-year-old building, but stipulated that the new owners must preserve the building’s historic character.
