This is in response to the Sun Journal story, “No charge for lunch” (Sept. 5).

It was stated in the article that the policy change to offer free lunches to all students at four Auburn schools will not cost Auburn taxpayers. In all seriousness, how can such a statement be made?

All Auburn citizens who earn a living and receive a paycheck have federal taxes withheld. These taxes fund federal programs such as the one mentioned in the article. (Healthy Hunger Free Act)

School Committee member Ron Potvin, who voted against approving this federally funded program, said it best. He said, “The cost of the lunches will come out of taxpayers’ pockets.”

He is right. No lunch is truly free.
