NEW GLOUCESTER — On Saturday, Sept. 13, Shaker Village will offer a series of traditional craft workshops, folk demonstrations, educational nature walks, free wagon rides and homemade Shaker apple fritters.

Workshops (pre-registration required) on Saturday include making a “Biblical Wreath” ($40) from the Shakers’ historic herb garden with renowned Shaker herbalist Betsey-Ann Golon.

In “Beginner’s Woodcarving,” local master-carved Norm Devonshire will teach how to sharpen knives, cutting techniques and methods of basic woodcarving, while each participant completes a “Scottie-dog” ($50).

Create unique holiday gifts and heirloom keepsakes in “Basic Bookmaking and Bookbinding” ($55) taught by local artist Bonnie Faulkner of Heron Point Gallery in Portland.

Resident naturalist Carolyn Fensore will lead “Nature’s Outdoor Classroom,” a 2 1/2-hour hike through the Shakers’ 1,800 acres of diversified habitats while identifying and explaining flora, fauna, geological formations and Shaker history along the way ($8 adults, $2 children).

Free demonstrations include textile working and yarn spinning by the R & R Spinners, Shaker-style brush making by master broom-squire Kent Ruesswick of Canterbury, N.H., and the ancient art of blacksmithing by Tim Greene of Hebron.

Free tractor-drawn wagon rides will be offered throughout the day. Tour the Shakers’ historic village, gardens and orchards.
