CAPE ELIZABETH — Two-dozen lighthouses are participating in this year’s Maine Open Lighthouse Day.

The daylong event on Saturday that’s sponsored by the United States Coast Guard, the Maine Office of Tourism and the American Lighthouse Foundation attracts more than 10,000 visitors each year.

Officials say it’s a rare opportunity for members of the public to go inside lighthouses.

Many of the state’s most popular lighthouses were participating. Those include Portland Head in Cape Elizabeth, Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Bristol, Bass Harbor Head on Mount Desert Island and Burnt Island Lighthouse in Boothbay harbor.
