CANTON — Selectmen on Thursday opened bids for a garage door for the former Maine Department of Transportation building, which will become the new public works building and sand/salt shed.

The bid was awarded to Overhead Door Corp. of Augusta for $3,138.

Approval was given to President Brian Jordan for the Canton Trail Riders ATV Club to use fields on Route 140 for its 18th annual ATV Toy Run on Saturday, Sept. 27. People are invited to bring new toys that are wrapped or cash donations. Jordan’s can be reached at 357-4460 for more information.

Resident Chris Dailey asked why the town didn’t vote by referendum ballot at the polls instead of at a town meeting in March.

Selectman Brian Keene said he thought people needed to discuss the issues at a meeting.

Selectman Malcolm Ray said discussion could be held at a hearing before voting.

Other selectmen said no one ever comes to hearings.

Board of Selectmen Chairman Donald Hutchins asked Town Administrator Scotty Kilbreth to get information on how other towns deal with referendums.

The board agreed to team up with Jay to fix Alden Hill Road so they could at least get snowplows up it.

The board voted to drop sewer fees for new homes from $500 to $50 to encourage new people to build in town.

Ray announced a film on bringing historic mill buildings back to life and the impact on communities will be shown from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Livermore Falls Town Office. To register for the free event at www.growsmartmaine.org/movienight.

The board will meet Oct. 30, Nov. 26 and Dec. 22.
