The liberal left are talking about hiking the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. Before doing that, Gov. Paul LePage and the Maine Legislature should lift the wage freeze for Maine’s city workers.
The cost of living has gone up dramatically, but for the second largest city in Maine, Lewiston custodians have the lowest wages. The average school custodian is making $3 to $4 per hour less than some towns and cities. That is very disappointing.
The average school worker is struggling to make ends meet because of high insurance premiums and taxes.
It seems to be OK for local and state government officials to give themselves a raise. But that is not right. Lewiston school employees are hard-working people and should receive a cost-of-living wage increase. Real earnings continue to fall.
Local and state governments should lift the wage freeze.
All I am asking for is a fair shake for the school workers.
