The Democrats won a sweeping victory in Lewiston and Auburn yesterday, carrying every ward in both cities and electing the entire county ticket. All of the wards were well policed, a watchful waiting guard of both police and deputy sheriffs being kept continuously on duty. This not only safeguarded the voter, but was a precautionary measure against stuffing the ballot boxes or the introduction of illegal methods of vote getting. So far as known, there was no “doped coffee” in any of the wards. It is claimed, however, that several repeaters were in the city fully equipped for business. As no arrests were made it is taken for granted that they were foiled in their nefarious work. Few evidences of liquor about the voting places were noticed and a less number of intoxicated persons than usual on election days were seen about the streets.
50 years ago, 1964
Work has commenced on the preparation of a police firing range at Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport for use by the Auburn Police Department. Initial grading and land clearing is underway and will continue until a regulation 125 by 300 foot range has been completed. Police Sgt. John W. Jordan, Auburn CD director, is directing the project.
25 years ago, 1989
Danville residents Thursday lost an early round in their fight against a light industrial zone proposed for a section of their village, but saw the size of that area reduced before the Planning Board approved the action 5-0. The board’s vote, which came after pleas from some Danville residents to postpone a decision until next month, will send a favorable recommendation to the City Council which can either accept or deny the zone change. While city officials said the zone would buffer residential areas against more potentially damaging factories and businesses, Danville residents said the plan would lead to their community’s destruction.
