WILTON — Police said a man walking on Route 156 past White Auto and wearing special gear with multiple knives early Monday afternoon was nothing to worry about.

After police received complaints about the man who was wearing camouflage, mesh, a bug mask over his face and carrying the knives, officer Derek Daley checked on him. He told police he was going to dequill a porcupine lying on the side of the road. The quills, he told Daley, are used to make jewelry.

The man was cooperative, had researched the law about carrying knives and knew they shouldn’t be concealed, Daley said. He told the officer that he just liked wearing camouflage clothing and he was wearing the mask to conceal his identity from people who might want to harm him, Daley said.

Daley said he told him that although he was free to wear the outfit, it gives the impression that he was about to do something illegal. It scared people, Daley said.

There was a porcupine on the side of the road above where Daley stopped him. The officer did see him begin the dequilling process, he said.
