AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A political action committee has begun a $70,000 campaign hitting Gov. Paul LePage for his education policies.

The PAC run by the Maine Education Association is sending out mailers attacking the Republican governor for proposing to eliminate Head Start funding and to cut $12.5 million from education, among other things.

Maine Republican Party spokesman David Sorensen tells the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1mb2ny7 ) that the mailers are the union’s “desperate attempt” to elect a governor who will “uncritically rubber stamp their agenda year after year.”

LePage has clashed with the union over his push to expand charter schools and implement A-F school grading system.

The mailers praise Democratic candidate Mike Michaud’s education proposals, like making the sophomore year of college-free, which they say will boost the college graduation rate.
