A simple letter written to Sen. Barry Goldwater by a ten-year-old Hebron girl has resulted in an invitation for her to be the official greeter for the GOP presidential nominee when he steps from his plane at Portland Municipal Airport Friday morning. Young Malinda Cushman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Cushman of Hebron, was notified of the unexpected honor Tuesday, and her anticipation of the big moment is keeping her on pins and needles. News of the invitation came to the young Brighton Hill School student Tuesday from Alden W. Morgan, chairman of the Hebron Republican Town Committee. He said the note came to the attention of workers at Goldwater headquarters at Portland, and they asked him to see if the Cushman family would be willing to participate in the senator’s appearance Friday.

Plans to close the waste lagoons on property owned by Maine Electronics will be the focus of a state Board of Environmental Protection meeting Thursday. The hearing will be at Lisbon High School. The public meeting is being held at the request of Maine People’s Alliance. The BEP rejected the alliance’s request for a public hearing on the issue, but did agree on a public meeting. The group opposes the plan because it will leave the hazardous waste on site and treat the lagoons as a landfill closure. The Lisbon chapter of the alliance has serious concerns about leaving any hazardous waste in a such a sensitive area. Because Maine Electronics is located over an aquifer that supplies the town’s Moody Road well — the principal water supply in Lisbon — the alliance believes a more stringent cleanup is needed.
