FARMINGTON — The Franklin County Animal Shelter reopened to the public on Thursday.

The shelter has just been approved by the state to reopen. It is parvovirus-free and has many wonderful cats and dogs available for adoption.

To celebrate its reopening on Oct. 2 and 3, FCAS will be hosting its second ‘Empty the Shelter’ event at which cat/kitten adoptions will be free and dog/puppy adoptions will be $50 or less.

FCAS has been closed since Sept. 3 because of a canine parvovirus outbreak. This virus only affects dogs and is highly contagious. Since the quarantine began, staff members have been working hard to contain and eradicate the virus as quickly as possible.

The shelter is also looking forward to welcoming back all volunteers for dog walking and cat care.

During this tough time for FCAS, community members have been extremely supportive. Every day, piles of bleach, blankets and paper towels were left on the shelter’s doorstep to aid with their cleaning efforts.

The grand reopening “Empty the Shelter” event is not only a way for the shelter to thank Franklin County citizens for their support, but also an opportunity to find loving homes for many cats and dogs after a long month in quarantine.
