100 years ago, 1914
Jack Frost, high winds, and bright sunshine was what the weather man handed out to New Gloucester Fair, Tuesday, but in spite of this combination farmers and their families for miles around gathered at the annual exhibit of farm products and cattle. Perhaps the most remarkable exhibit at any fair this year in Maine, certainly at New Gloucester, was the entire garden of eight-year-old Irving Loring, which has been transplanted to the fair grounds, “dirt ‘n all.” Practically everything grown in a vegetable garden is shown by Master Loring. His entire crop of four bushels of fine looking potatoes are included in the display.

50 years ago, 1964
Automobiles have for years been equipped with self-starters, but one car in Auburn early Thursday morning really made use of this piece of important equipment. “You had to be there to believe it,” was the way Lt. Leslie F. Stewart of Auburn police described the incident which took place shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday in the yard of Higgins Auto Sales, 9 Center St. A 1960 automobile, parked with others in a row facing Center Street, actually started by itself four times within the space of just a few minutes, and probably would have done so some more had not the police lieutenant disconnected the battery.

25 years ago, 1989
Monday came and went and local banks opened and closed their doors without incident, a break in an apparent pattern of bank robberies that has plagued the area for the four previous weeks. A lone gunman who struck on the first day of the banking week made all four of the recent weekly heists. Police have said the robberies could be the work of one individual, although they say a copycat may also be at work.
