AUBURN — Two Auburn students have tied the 2014 Auburn Book Award, a contest held annually since 2001.
They are Ellena Frumiento, a Hebron Academy seventh-grader, and Rebecca Raby, who attends Auburn Middle School. Both were Auburn sixth-graders last year when they wrote their books.
Raby’s book is “Bee Nice.” It’s a realistic fiction picture book about a Maine blueberry farm. Three friends observe that blueberry field yields are dropping and investigate the cause.
Raby used interesting collage papers to illustrate her book, according to Auburn teacher Joanie Simard, who worked with students creating books. Raby is the daughter of Jim and Charmaine Raby.
Frumiento wrote and illustrated her poetry book, “Rainbow Flowers,” organized by the colors of the rainbow. Her book incorporates watercolor and oil pastels with large, colorful blossoms. Her mother’s garden inspired her to create a book about flowers. She is the daughter of Carmine and Laurie Frumiento.
The book project, open to Auburn elementary school students, is designed to promote student writing and simulate the world of book publishing. Students write and illustrate original books, submit them for publishing and promote them with book signings.
The two winners will sign their books at an Auburn Book Project Awards Celebration from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Auburn Public Library.
The public is invited.
