I am writing in support of my colleague, Sen. John Cleveland, who is an effective advocate for his district.

He is driven every day by the question of what he can do to help create better opportunities for people in his district. That is why he supported raising Maine’s minimum wage and helped negotiate an energy bill to reduce costs for families and businesses.

And he has stood up for real welfare reform because benefits should only go to the people who need them, not toward things such as cigarettes and alcohol.

He understands his district because he was born and raised there. Growing up in New Auburn, he went to work at Billen Shoe at age 15 so that he could pay for college. He has never forgotten his roots.

John Cleveland deserves voters’ support on Nov. 4.
