1933 – 2014

LEWISTON — Hilda Mae (McPhail) Townsend, 81, of Lewiston passed away Sunday, Sept. 28, after a brief illness.

She was born in Perry on July 21, 1933, the daughter of Frank Albert and Bertha Mae (Seeley) McPhail.

Hilda attended Perry Elementary School and graduated in 1950 from Shead Memorial High School in Eastport.

She was briefly employed by the Eastport Sentinel and for several years at the Law Office of Oscar Whalen.

On June 1, 1962, Hilda married Robert L. Townsend of Eastport. After a few years, they settled in Lewiston, where they spent 47 years. She then worked at Berman and Simmons Law Office in Lewiston until her retirement.

Hilda and Bob spent several winters in Zephyrhills, Fla., where she enjoyed bingo, music concerts and yard sales as well as many friends from the U.S .and Canada at Sleepy Hollow’s Park One.

Hilda attended the Congregational Church in Perry for several years, then attended the congregational churches in Waterford and in Zephyrhills, Fla.

Hilda was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Beatrice Theriault and Edna McPhail; brother, Emery; nephews, Ray Theriault and Douglas McPhail; and her niece, Helen McPhail.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; nieces Doris Verrill of New Hampshire, Janet McPhail and her husband, Lewis, of Perry and Patricia Cline and her husband, Warren, of Franklin, N.H.; nephews Richard McPhail and wife, Nancy, of Dayton, Harold McPhail of Perry, Ernest McPhail and wife, Frances, of Northfield, N.H., and William McPhail of Rumford; many grandnieces and nephews; and many special friends. She will be missed very much by her cat, Happy.
