I am a board member of the Root Cellar. The Lewiston Root Cellar serves some of the neediest people in the Lewiston-Auburn area. We are compelled by Jesus’ love to serve him and we seek to empower our neighbors through efforts at the Root Cellar.

We are currently as busy as we have ever been. I was hiking in New Hampshire when I learned of the recent fire on Birch Street in Lewiston. I later learned that some great Root Cellar volunteers and the director, Joel Furrow, moved to action as that event occurred to open our building late into the night to provide temporary shelter to the fire victims, as well as to collaborate with responders, such as the Red Cross.

The volunteers and staff remained until the victims were safely housed.

At our monthly board meeting, I learned even more about how we still are seeking to support those affected, collecting items the victims will need as they move forward — gift cards of much needed cash. Also, there will be a spaghetti dinner planned for Oct. 9 at the Lewiston Root Cellar. Those are just a few ways we are seeking to help.

Even as a board member, I am amazed at the love and heart and the leadership the Lewiston Root Cellar showed that night and shows daily.

Mike McClellan, Raymond
