Talk: ‘Commercial-Free Childhood’

FREEPORT — Dr. Susan Linn, director of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, will give a public talk titled “The Gift of a Commercial-Free Childhood,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Merriconeag Waldorf School’s Community Hall, 57 Desert Road. Donations will be accepted at the door.

While parents try to set limits at home, marketing executives work day and night to undermine their efforts with commercial messages irresistible to children. Childhood obesity, violent behaviors, precocious sexuality, rampant consumerism, family stress and the erosion of children’s creative play have all been linked to a commercialized childhood.

Linn will provide suggestions for what can be done to protect children.

Linn is the author of “Consuming Kids: The Hostile Takeover of Childhood” and “The Case for Make Believe: Saving Play in a Commercialized World.”

Used book sale at West Paris Library

WEST PARIS — The West Paris Library will hold its Annual Used Book Sale from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Historical Society building on Main Street, across from the library.

A wide selection of books will be available for purchase, including many recent best sellers in hard cover and paperback, as well as books for children and young adults and a variety of nonfiction subjects for all ages.

There will be an opportunity to win fall raffle prizes. Coffee and muffins will be available.

On Oct. 18, also at the Historical Society building, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the remaining books will be sold in a Buck-a-Bag Sale. On this day, the raffle winners will be drawn.

Stone-Smart plans fall craft fair

NORWAY — Stone-Smart American Legion Auxiliary Unit 82 will hold their annual fall craft fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the hall on Main Street.

There will be a food sale table and white elephant table.

The lunch counter will be open serving chowder, sandwiches and hot dogs.

Tickets will be on sale for the “Mainly” made in Maine raffle that will be drawn that afternoon.

Wildlife Park discount pass

WEST PARIS — There is still plenty of time to borrow the Gray Wildlife Park special discount pass available at the West Paris Library, courtesy of their Friends’ group.

Everyone 4 years old and over, entering with the pass, will pay only $2.50, instead of $7 or $5. The park is open through Nov. 11, Veterans Day, and then it closes for the winter. Its hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The pass can be reserved and picked up ahead of time at the library. Recent visitors to the park report that this is a good time to visit, as the animals are more active now that the weather is cooler.

Heywood Club to meet Oct. 13

NORWAY — The Heywood Club will hold its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at the Clubhouse.

The guest speaker will be Judy Camuso, Maine wildlife biologist, who will present facts and figures regarding the upcoming referendum on bear hunting. All members are encouraged to attend, and bring their partner/spouses and other interested neighbors to this meeting.

Supper dance at American Legion

LOCKE MILLS — A supper dance will be held from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the American Legion Hall. Doors open at 4.

Music will be provided by the Shadagee Ramblers.

The ham harvest supper with include homemade pies.

Adults supper/dance, $10; supper, $7; child, $3.

Prosthetic and bra fittings

NORWAY — The Women’s Imaging Center at Stephens Memorial Hospital is offering professional prosthetic and bra fittings for women on the third Wednesday of every month. For an appointment, call 744-6079. Insurances are accepted and low cost help is available.

Community lunch, pumpkin share

OTISFIELD — A community lunch and “sharing your extra pumpkins” will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Community Hall, Route 121. The lunch is free; donations are accepted.

Menu includes roast pork, scalloped potatoes, carrots, salads, apple crisp, coffee and tea.

OXFORD — Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge Club met Oct. 3. A seven-table Mitchell movement was enjoyed.

Finishing first in flight A N/S were Pete Cummings (South Paris) and Dick Allen (New Gloucester); second, Mike Quinn (Otisfield) and Mike True (Auburn); third, Rosemarie Goodwin (Lewiston) and Luke Merry (Windham); fourth, Henry Deutsch (Lovell) and Les Buzzell (Auburn).

Finishing first in flight B were Bunny Banks (Windham) and Barbara Newcomb (Portland), tied with Marjorie Levesque (Casco) and Dave Kallander (Raymond), who also were first in flight C; third, Denny Raymond (Waterford) and Richard Balian (Waterford).

Raw milk production guidelines

ORONO — University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s bulletin with guidelines on raw milk production is available for licensed dealers and people interested in becoming licensed with the state of Maine.

Donald E. Hoenig, VMD, UMaine Extension, authored “Raw Milk Production: Guidelines for Maine Licensed Dealers.” Topics covered include milking procedures, milk room equipment, milking facilities, cleaning equipment, raw milk and foodborne illness, and tests conducted by the Department of Agriculture.
