1952 – 2014

JAY — Chief Larry G. White Sr., 61, of Jay, passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. It was the end of his battle with pancreatic cancer, which began when he was diagnosed in January.

Larry was born in Lewiston on Nov. 19, 1952, a son of Ernest White and Ruth (Dutille) White. He graduated from Lewiston High School and received further education in criminal justice at the University of Maine campus in Lewiston. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Janice Cote, on Oct. 30, 1971.

Larry was very proud of his career in law enforcement. He spent time working dispatch, in the jail and on patrol for local departments, including the Lewiston Police Department, Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department, Sabattus and Livermore Falls police departments, before finally settling into Jay in 1987. In Jay, he has served as a patrolman, detective, DARE officer, sergeant, police chief and director of public safety (fire chief).

In his spare time, Larry enjoyed hunting, fishing and trips to the coast with his wife. His most cherished times were those spent with his children and grandchildren.

Larry is survived by his wife, Janice, of Jay; two children, Becky Mills and her husband, Travis, of Livermore Falls and Larry White Jr. of Jay; two brothers, Dale White and his wife, Michelle, of Lewiston and George Gagnon of Auburn; and five grandchildren, Leah Pottle and her husband, Mike, Tyler Mills, Amber White, Riley Mills and Troy Haines.

He was predeceased by his parents.
