RUMFORD — The Holy Savior Catholic School is hosting a silent auction and dinner for a third consecutive year from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at St. Athanasius and St. John Church Hall.

Resident Sheila Bentley, who volunteers with prekindergarten students at Holy Savior Catholic School, said that she and her son-in-law, Chris Brown, have been organizing the auction and dinner for the past three years.

“Chris’ daughter goes to Holy Savior, so while we were at one of those parent-teacher meetings, I came up with the idea to do a benefit for the school,” Bentley said. “When I approached the school, they said, ‘Well, what would you like to do?’ I said I wanted to put on a dinner, and they said, ‘Sure!’”

Bentley said that over the past three years the silent auction and dinner have progressively grown.

“We get more and more people each year, which is amazing,” Bentley said. “We’ve decided to keep the event simple: We prepare the dinner, serve it and then have the silent auction.”

The dinner will consist of homemade macaroni and cheese, homemade coleslaw, dinner rolls and a variety of desserts.

Bentley said that takeout orders will be available.

A wide variety of items will be available for the silent auction, Bentley said, including a drawing easel and several themed baskets.

“Some people donate stuff to us to put in the auction,” Bentley said. “The most important thing, for me, is that we have a wide variety of things to auction off.”

All money raised will go toward the Holy Savior Catholic School.

“The whole idea of doing this thing was to raise money for the school and find something fun to do for the people in the area,” Bentley said. “I’m not sure what the school is going to use the money for, but I just wanted to do something so they could have it, especially with the all the budget cuts the state is making nowadays.”
