Through the years, I have had the privilege of serving many Oxford County towns as town attorney and wanted to share an experience I had with Lee Holman, candidate for county commissioner.

Three times I have worked with towns in various parts of Maine in the circumstance that recall elections left only one selectperson in office. In two of the three instances, town government simply stopped until there was either court action or a new election took place, at great inconvenience to the town’s citizens.

When that happened in Hartford, many years ago, Holman was the sole remaining selectperson. Even though I advised her that if she kept the town open and incurred the usual expenses in doing so, there was some risk of personal liability. She said to me that she would pay those expenses out of her own pocket if necessary rather than shut the town down.
