PORTLAND — Officials in the city of Portland say they are opening the first footgolf course in Maine.

Portland Mayor Michael Brennan is unveiling the course at Riverside Golf Course on Monday morning. Footgolf is a sport that combines soccer and golf. The sport will be playable at the golf course’s South Course from Friday until Nov. 30. City officials say the golf course is the first to offer the sport in the state.

The first World Cup of footgolf took place in Hungary in 2012. The sport is essentially golf played with a kicked soccer ball. The team needing the fewest shots to complete the course wins.
