FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners voted 2-0 Tuesday to accept a proposal from Seacoast Security of West Rockland to update the fire suppression and alarm systems at the jail for $8,675.91.

They approved the proposal knowing that the cost might be about $2,000 more because of some components not included in the quote.

Protection 1 of Portland’s proposal was for $22,200 for the upgrade.

Seacoast is a lot cheaper but there are missing components in both proposals for what is needed to be done, Greg Roux, county facility manager, said.

Additional charges would be $91 a month for Seacoast Security for monitoring and inspection services. Protection 1 would charge $166 month, Roux said.

Commissioner Clyde Barker of Strong was not at the meeting, county Clerk Julie Magoon said. He fell and broke his tailbone and will be out for six to eight weeks, she said.

Commissioners also approved hiring Felicia Floyd of Jay as a full-time corrections officer at the jail. She replaces Jhustin Welch, who was recently hired but took a full-time job with the National Guard.

Floyd is a certified corrections officer, jail manager Maj. Doug Blauvelt said.

Commissioner Gary McGrane of Jay told Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. that Franklin County was presented a check for $1,500 at the Maine County Commissioners Association convention for the Sheriff’s Department’s safe driving habits related to driving county vehicles.

McGrane said the county tied for third place.
