HARRISON — This year’s 5K Run by the Lake attracted a record 199 runners and walkers and generated a sizeable amount of money to fund local recreational programs.

Miranda Murphy, a student at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, directed the first ever Super Hero Half Mile Dash as part of the event, which she chose as her senior project. Murphy registered 36 children, who dressed up in super hero costumes, and awarded each hero with a handcrafted medal, a super hero cookie and a bottle of water. The winner of each age group received a homemade super hero cape.

The event raised over $400 for the park and recreation department from individual and business donations.

According to Paula Holt, director of the municipal recreation department, “I am always very appreciative and extremely grateful when community members step forward to volunteer their time and energy into either coaching, assisting, umpiring, refereeing, helping supervise and work on special activities, programs and large events along with baking and providing food for certain programs requiring meals, snacks and desserts.”

Holt said it wouldn’t be possible for the department to offer such a wide variety of quality sports, recreation and leisure activities year round to residents and visitors of all ages without so much help from the community.

The 5K Run by the Lake started in 2003 and is the town’s largest fundraiser.
