JAY — The North Jay Water District issued a boil-water order until further notice after a major break occurred in a waterline early Saturday along Route 4, near the Fire Station in North Jay.
Only those customers who lost water have to boil their water, district Treasurer Ron Moreau said.
Superintendent Mike Wells brought samples to a laboratory in Augusta on Monday to test for E. coli and coliform bacteria, he said. The district will make an announcement when customers can stop boiling water.
Affected customers should boil water for one minute, Wells previously said.
That includes water people plan to drink, use to brush their teeth and make ice cubes. After the water is boiled, it can be put in the refrigerator, he said.
District representatives tried to alert customers to the boil-water order over the weekend.
