LAWRENCE, Mass. — A 13-year-old girl who was crossing a set of train tracks with a friend was hit and killed by a commuter train in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
Carrie Kimball Monahan, of the Essex District Attorney’s office, says in a statement that the accident happened Friday afternoon. The girls were cutting between two cars of a stationary train on one set of tracks and failed to see the oncoming train, which was en route to Haverhill.
The girl was taken to Lawrence General where she died. No other details were released. Monahan told The Boston Globe that the victim’s friend wasn’t injured.
Mac Daniel, spokesman for the commuter rail operator, tells the newspaper the accident disrupted service for commuter lines and the Amtrak Downeaster for several hours.
