FARMINGTON — A commuting student at the University of Maine at Farmington escaped with minor injuries Wednesday morning when he lost control of his car and it rolled over on the first of a series of sharp curves on the Temple Road.

Cody Garland, 21, of Rochester, N.H., said he was traveling to school from his home in Temple shortly after 9 a.m. The roads were still wet when he came around the first curve and his tires lost traction. He tried to gain control of the vehicle, but it went into the guardrail and rolled over.

Speed may have been a factor, Farmington police officer Ryan Rosie said at the scene located across from 301 Temple Road. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and the airbag did not deploy, Rosie said.

Garland, driving a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, crawled out of the vehicle on his own. He was shaken by the experience and suffered some minor injuries. He was checked by NorthStar emergency personnel at the scene, but was not taken to the hospital.

A senior at UMF, Garland said this was his first year commuting, but he had traveled the route every day since school started.

Franklin County Sheriff Deputy Colt Bernhardt assisted at the scene as did members of Farmington Fire and Rescue.

Farmington Towing towed the vehicle from the scene.
