PORTLAND — Ignite, a new Catholic young adult ministry group in Portland, will welcome Bishop Robert P. Deeley at the “Hour of Power” on Friday, Dec. 5, in the chapel at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and is open to people of all ages, with a special invitation to young adults in their twenties and thirties.
On the first Friday of each month, Ignite hosts the “Hour of Power” which includes adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, an opportunity for confession and uplifting music. In addition to sharing spiritual reflections with those gathered on Dec. 5, Deeley will lead the group in the Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. This prayer form is a traditional Catholic devotion, the purpose of which is to adore Jesus Christ who is present in the Eucharist.
Ignite members seek to provide an environment in which young people can grow in faith and knowledge through prayer and discussion of Sacred Scripture, while also fostering a community of service through charitable works.
“Ignite hosts social, service, and faith-filled activities at various times throughout the month, so there are opportunities for even the busiest people to attend and grow in holiness through their relationship with Jesus Christ,” said Meg Clukey, an Ignite leader. “Currently, we have members coming regularly from as far as Lewiston, Gorham, Saco and many other towns in southern Maine.”
In addition to the monthly “Hour of Power,” Ignite hosts “Living Courageously,” a study on the life of the saints, every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Catholic Charities Maine offices on 307 Congress St.
